Established in 1883, the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition is the world’s oldest international writing competition for schools, engaging thousands of young people each year. It celebrates creativity, encourages literacy, and amplifies youth voices across the Commonwealth.
With over 2.5 billion people in the Commonwealth—60% of whom are under 30—the competition recognizes the power of young people to lead change and create impact. Essay Theme and Topics
The theme for CHOGM 2024 in Samoa is “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.” Participants are invited to reflect on resilience, unity, and sustainable development through creative expression.
Senior Category (Ages 14–18)
- “It’s worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the most lasting change.” – Queen Elizabeth II. What small steps can you take to tackle climate change?
- Write a speech about the most pressing global issue and how Commonwealth values can help solve it.
- Explain how your cultural values can strengthen cooperation and community in the Commonwealth.
- Write a letter to your President or Prime Minister about achieving peace, liberty, and progress.
Junior Category (Under 14 years)
- What new habit can you adopt to contribute to a greener Commonwealth?
- Write a dialogue with a grandparent about resilience and hope.
- Imagine speaking to sea creatures during a beach cleanup—what do they say?
- Describe how you’d make friends while on a school exchange in another Commonwealth country.
Prizes and Awards
Winners and runners-up in each category will receive:
- A Certificate of Participation for all entrants.
- A fully funded trip to London for a week of educational and cultural activities.
- Additional prizes may include:
- Visits to Cambridge University
- Media features and publication opportunities
- School resources and certificates
- Work experience at international organizations
- Local awards from RCS regional branches
Eligibility Criteria
- Entries must be in English.
- Open to all citizens and residents of Commonwealth countries under 18.
- Non-Commonwealth residents may apply through a local RCS branch.
- Entries may include illustrations (especially in the Junior category).
How to Apply
Online Submission:
- The RCS is launching a new online platform for 2025 submissions.
- Essays cannot be sent by email.
Offline Submission:
- Only available to those without internet access.
- Download and complete the entry form from the official website.
- Attach it to your essay and post it to the nearest RCS postal hub before June 30, 2025.
